Greenfield 7s Drop Close Game in Bottom of Sixth

6/29/2017

After two dominating performances, the Greenfield 7s ran into a challenge in the West Mifflin tournament, losing a close game to Thomas Jefferson, 18-17.

After battling back and forth, Greenfield was up in the bottom of the sixth, 17-16, but Thomas Jefferson was up at the plate. First there was a single, then a triple to tie the game.

With the winning run on third base, the infield moved in to make a play at home. Unfortunately for Greenfield, the next hitter popped one over the infielders' heads to bring the run in and win the game.

Great job hitting by both teams, with an exciting finish!

Greenfield 10s Take First Game at Riverview

6/29/2017

The Greenfield 10s racked up 15 runs on Tuesday at the Riverview Tournament, beating Natrona Heights 15-10 in their first action of the tournament.

It was the top of the order for Greenfield that churned out the runs, and the lead swung back and forth. First, Greenfield scored five in the first inning. Then Natrona Heights came back and took the lead in the third inning, 6-5.

Greenfield didn't stay down for long, though. The boys in green put up another bunch of runs to take back the lead, but, again, Natrona Heights wouldn't go away. They cut Greenfield's lead by the end of the fifth, making the score 11-9.

In the top of the sixth, Greenfield batted itself to a little cushion, but no one could rest easy with the way Natrona Heights could score runs.

After one more run came across, with more people on base, Coach White turned to Logan Carter to close up the shop. Three strikeouts later, the Greenfield fans celebrated their first victory of the tournament season.

Way to battle, Greenfield 10s!

12s Complete Comeback to Win Riverside Championship

6/25/2017

Picture
The 12s came into Sunday's tournament playoffs on a roll, but they could see on the tournament board that there was, in the other bracket, another gorilla in the jungle. That was the Freeport team, which had been steamrolling everyone in their path.

First up for Greenfield, though, was Penn Hills.

Brandon Twigg pitched three solid innings, holding Penn Hills to one run, while the Greenfield bats churned out enough base hits to pile up the runs. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Greenfield bats added the last couple of runs to stop the game early by 10-run-rule.

The championship game against Freeport got started an hour later, and the first three innings looked bleak for the boys from Greenfield.

In the first three innings, the Greenfield hitters were popping out, grounding out, or striking out. Three batters up, and three down...for three innings. On the other side of those innings, Freeport was putting the ball in play just outside the reach of Greenfield gloves, including one home run, a couple of shots to right center field, and several hard hits that rode the chalk down the left field line.

By the beginning of the fourth inning, the score was Freeport 7, Greenfield 0, and it was time for Greenfield's tenth batter, Isaac Koerber, to get up to the plate for the first time.

With two strikes on him, Koerber found a seam in the Freeport defense with a sizzling grounder for Greenfield's first base hit of the game. He stole second, then was moved to third by Jordan Osborne's ground-out. He then stole home, dancing his way around the Freeport player with the ball.

That got the Greenfield crowd into the game. Then, on a 2-2 count, Samson Hill blasted a solo home run into the creek behind the center field fence and danced around the diamond.

In the first three innings, Matthew Mock struck out several batters and got several to hit weak grounders, some of which he fielded himself. Bryan McCann came in for the fourth and fifth innings to deny Freeport any additional runs.

In the top of the fifth, the Greenfield rally continued in a big way. Brandon Twigg started off with a solo home run to cut Freeport's lead to 7-3. An unbroken string of hits followed, as everyone in the line up got up to the plate that inning. This string included a shot by Luther Harper down the right field line that hit the fence only a few inches short of a home run. When the dust settled, Greenfield was on top 11-7.

Greenfield added another run in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Brady Sulinski caught an infield pop up for the first out, then closer Samson Hill struck out the last two batters to complete the win.

Coach Jim Gregg told the boys that this was one of the most impressive comebacks he has seen in tournament play. Thanks go out to all the parents and fans who spurred on the rally with their encouragement, and congratulations to the Greenfield 12s, Riverside Tournament Champions!

7s Take First Game at West Mifflin Tourney

6/25/2017

Greenfield's youngest tournament team put together an impressive team performance against Squirrel Hill in the West Mifflin Tournament, winning 13-8.

The Greenfield bats were hot in the first and fourth innings. Both innings were stopped after Greenfield had already racked up its five-run-per-inning limit.

Both Max Gallagher and Greyson Pegher went 3 for 3 on the day, and the offense was rolling.

Defensively, the infield got most of the balls and played them smartly. Ryan White and Griffin Dworek anchored the infield at shortstop and second base, making several key plays.

Congrats to the 7s for a great start to the tournament season!

Riverview Tournament for 12s Underway

6/24/2017

The Greenfield 12s got a slow start their first few innings Wednesday, but both their bats and their defense came alive down the stretch of that game and two more on Saturday.

Against the South Hills "Wild Things" Wednesday, the boys in green found themselves in a 7-1 hole in the third inning. They chipped away at that lead in the fourth, then blew the game wide open in the fifth with back-to-back bombs by Bryan McCann and Samson Hill.

Luther Harper also had a nice poke to right field with the bases loaded as part of that rally.

McCann, meanwhile, kept the South Hills bats quiet, and the defense kept the Wild Things from adding any more runs. The final score was 11-7.

--------------------------------

One game postponed due to Friday's deluge, Greenfield was rescheduled to play Riverview at 2 p.m. and Fox Chapel at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 24.

Against Riverview, the Greenfield 12s got going early, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Matt Mock held down the lead through the first three innings with some smart pitching, including a wicked curve ball.

No one managed to poke the ball over the short outfield fence for a home run, but Greenfield's base running kept Riverside listening for footsteps, and twice, a Greenfield guy stole home.

Brandon Twigg, Samson Hill, and Jordan Osborne finished out the pitching, with one scoreless inning apiece. The final tally was 7-0 in favor of Greenfield.

--------------------------------

The third game, against Fox Chapel, was a workmanlike team performance on both offense and defense. It ended in the fifth inning with a 10-run decision, 10-0.

Bryan McCann started the scoring in the first inning by stealing second, then third, and then jogging in on a hard grounder to right field by Samson Hill.

It wasn't until after the third inning, though, that the Greenfielders really started getting around the diamond, and the main engines were singles, a few doubles, and some hard running.

Michael Twigg pitched a strong first couple of innings and hit a nice drive to the outfield with the bases loaded. Brandon Twigg pitched one scoreless inning and McCann two more to close out the shutout.

In all the games, the outfield has been solid, with catches by Matt Mock, Ethan Heidel-Roberts, and Jordan Osborne. Osborne made one acrobatic leaping catch, running from center towards right field, and nearly had another on a similar hit.

The Greenfield 12s play Sunday, June 25, at 2 p.m. in the playoff round. If they win, they will play for the championship at 4:30. Win or lose on Sunday, the boys are doing well and having fun at Riverside!

Rain Reschedules Deciding World Series Games

6/15/2017

Both the Minor League and the Little League World Series have had their game three rescheduled due to the late afternoon thunderstorms this week.

The Tigers won the first round and the Pirates took the second round in the Minor League World Series. Game three of the title tilt is scheduled for Friday, June 16, at 6 p.m., weather permitting.

In the Little League World Series, the Mets dominated the first game and the Red Sox dominated the second. The third game promises to be a pitching duel between Bryan McCann and Matthew Mock, and the forecast also calls for a strong chance of home runs! The third game is scheduled for Saturday, June 17, at noon.

Come cheer on the kids as we round out the season in Greenfield baseball!

Come out and watch what should be an entertaining series of baseball!

Red Sox Break Out in Fourth, Move on to World Series

6/4/2017

The Red Sox move on to the Greenfield World Series after downing the Cardinals 12-3.

The game was tight until the fourth inning, with the Sox holding onto a slim 3-2 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Red Sox batters just kept hitting the ball and finding the gaps, one after another. That inning accounted for nine more Sox runs.

In their innings, the Cardinals were getting the bats on the ball as well, but missing the gaps. Two long shots to the outfield came right to the right fielder to end otherwise promising action.

Earlier in the game, Matt Mock started off the scoring for the Sox by stealing home, moving "like a cat" as Coach Mike Mock always preaches. Alexander Victoria got a timely RBI hit for the Cardinals earlier to help get runs on the board for the Cardinals.

The Sox now wait to see who they will face in Game 1 of the World Series, which will be Saturday, June 10, at noon.

Mets, Red Sox take first games of their series

6/2/2017

The playoffs are underway, and the games have been fun and competitive!

Cardinals vs. Red Sox
Thursday, the Red Sox squeaked through with a 6-5 victory over the Cardinals. Cardinals pitcher Michael Twigg dominated the first half of the game, but the Sox's bats came alive down the stretch.

Mets vs. Orioles
Tuesday, the underdog Orioles jumped ahead of the Mets 1-0 in the first, 3-1 in the third, and 6-3 in the fifth, only to have the Mets come roaring back. In the first and third, Bryan McCann did the honors, hitting two home runs, a solo and a two-run shot over the center-field fence.

In the fifth, with the bases loaded, Joel Gandy hit a high floater into the dead zone between the second baseman and the right fielder, tying up the game at 6.

In the bottom of the sixth with two on base and no outs, Ethan Heidel Roberts came up to bat. Having struck out twice already, he was more than ready to get a hit, and he tagged the ball for a high walk-off home run to left center field! Congrats to Ethan for a timely first home run of the season!

The second playoff games for Little League are Saturday at noon and at 4.
